Director Richard Linklater (Dazed & Confused, Before Sunset) reunites with Jack Black (star of his School of Rock) in the fascinating dark comedy Bernie. Black plays the titular character, a funeral home director beloved by his rural Texas community. Bernie befriends the curmudgeonly, wealthy widow Marjorie (Shirley MacLaine), and the two become traveling companions. Flash forward several months, and their relationship has taken a dark turn. Based on a wild but true story, Bernie blurs the line between documentary and narrative, incorporating interviews of East Texas locals into its strange, morbidly funny narrative.
"A triumph of small-scale, regional pulp. Some will think of Fargo (apt, but this movie is gentler), others, the documentaries of Werner Herzog." (Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York)
